Nanny first, including a toddler with Down syndrome. Then au pair for two years with a family based in Miami. They kept me, and they took me with them: Dubai, New York, Tennessee, Argentina, Brazil, and home to Mauritius. Different time zones, different houses, the same small people needing different things at four in the morning.

That is the part I would want to know, if I were you. Not how many families I have worked for, but that one family trusted me with their children across five countries and several years. The rest of my experience is with the little ones: day cares, preschools, and other families’ homes. I learned what the books say, and then I learned what actually happens when the book is not helping.

The moment I knew I wanted to build this came during a run of nights when the parents of one of the babies I looked after were out of the country, and it was just me and him. He cried, and there was nobody to hand him to. We started his sleep training in those weeks, without them there to lean on, and by the time they came home he was sleeping through the night. So were they. That is when it became clear to me: every family deserves someone who knows what to do at four in the morning, and most of them do not have one.
